Sydney sat back into the seat she was in yesterday, opposite to Abby. The man that sat to Abby’s right wasn’t the same man. It was dawn right now and the sun casted a mix of green and blue in the sky.

“How did you sleep?” Abby asked as she pushed back the hair curled up from the back of her head, which just sprang straight back up as soon as her hands left it.

“Ok, not too bad. I wouldn’t call the ground ideal though.”

The doors of the vehicle – which were controlled by the drivers- came down vertically and closed with a click.

“Ha, I don’t think anyone would.”

Abby stopped trying to get her hair from springing up and instead she just pushed it down and pressed it against her head rest which made her look uncomfortable.

Sydney started laughing.

“I know. I look stiff as cardboard right now don’t I?

“Yes” she replied still laughing.

The vehicle started to turn out of the rock formation and set its course.

“Well I would rather look silly now compared to if we were attacked. I don’t think any bandit could take me seriously with this ridiculous bed head.”

Sydney decided to change the subject “How long left until we reach the outpost?”

“I’m not sure precisely, but we covered a lot of hours yesterday. So we will arrive in a few hours.”

***

It had been three hours since they departed from the camp, Sydney wondered if they would ever arrive. The surrounding scenery was plain and uninteresting; the only thing that was moving was a few lone birds in the sky.

Abby was sitting with one of her hands cupping the side of her face and her elbow on the armrest. Her hair stopped bouncing back up, she looked bored but no longer looked like a cardboard cut-out with blond hair. Like-wise the other soldiers look just as bored.

Then the scenery stopped looping outside the window.

“Why are we stopping?” Sydney asked.

“Well we can’t just enter as if it was a drive thru.”

“What’s a drive thru?”

“Don’t mind that” Abby said hastily. The idea is we need clearance, we can’t just waltz in. These are dangerous times and people are losing trust.”

She seemed sadden after the last part of her sentence, but the vehicle started moving forward again before Sydney could question it and within minutes after that it had stopped again. Everyone began getting out without hesitation.

Abby got out and stretched her arms out, exhaling with relief.

Sydney didn’t blame her. They had been sitting for hours without anything to do, the other soldiers probably felt the same way except they didn’t show it.

The vehicles were parked in a line in front of the buildings; they all had dark blue roofs and blue walls that were on the borderline of being white, some were bigger than others.

“This is the military outpost, isn’t it?”

“Yes, built quite recently” Abby replied facing the biggest building. “We’re trying to conserve as much time as possible. So if you want to see the inside, come quickly.”

They both half jogged to the doors which smoothly slid to the sides as they approached.
The inside was nearly the same as the outside. The walls were a nearly invisible blue, but above the panels were the same colour as the walls. Sydney suspected if she took a panel out, the dark blue roof would be reveal.

It was cool inside; even if it didn’t have cooling the building would still be colder than outside.

“Not much for interior decorating?” Sydney questioned.

“Well functionality over cosmetics” Abby said walking past her. “Come. You’re the representative so you handle the data.”

Sydney followed her through several turns and ended to a room that looked exactly like the others they had past.

“This is the Tactician’s office. Just get the data and try to be polite” Abby said. “I’ll be waiting out here.”

“Right.”

Sydney knocked on the door, which rang as it was metal.

“You may enter.” The voice was rough.

She turned the door knob, entered and closed the door behind her. A man sat behind a metal desk working on something, a computer and projected holograms were laid out in front of him. He had sandy hair that reminded her of dried grass in the desert and was dressed in white clothing, which had gold outlines and designs with a matching cloak.

“Please take a seat” he said without looking up from his work. “You must be Sydney?”

“Yes, I am” she said as she sat down on the chair in front of the man.

He touched the transparent screen on his computer monitor and all the holograms disappeared. He got up and walked to Sydney whilst taking his white gloves off, his cloak trailing him.

“I’m the Tactician of this outpost” he said extending his hand. “Logan.”
Sydney stood up and shook his hand.

“I believe you are here for this?”

He pulled out a dark blue flat rectangle from one of his pockets on his jacket. It was about ten centimeters long and had a large transparent section going across it.

“This shard holds the data and more importantly, the fate of O.P.T and the citizens of The Dome” Logan held it in front of him. “I entrust it to you Representative Sydney, as Tactician.”

Sydney took the shard data drive. It felt heavy between her fingers.

“Good luck” Logan straighten his posture then put his right arm across his stomach with his hand on the pommel of his long sword and his left hand on the sheath. The salute of O.P.T.

“Thank you” she said still thinking about the responsibility she held.

Sydney put it in one of her pockets on her jeans then left the room carefully closing the door behind her.

Abby was still standing where she had been before as if seconds past.

“So how was it?” She asked. “You look slightly shaken.”

“It was…” Sydney thought about it for a second. “…formal.”

“Hey, you might be holding some important data” she punched her on the shoulder.

“Hey!” Sydney exclaimed, rubbing her shoulder with her hand.

“That’s why…” She patted her holster on her belt. “…we’re here. Don’t worry you’ll be fine.”

She patted her back twice. “Let’s go.”

Sydney smiled slightly. It was a smile with no meaning.

They left the building and got back into their seats. The vehicles departed quickly.

***

It had been two hours since the departure of the outpost. The energy in the vehicle was different from when they had arrived this way; everyone was on anxious, even Abby who was normally so carefree was tense, but still talked to Sydney.

Sydney knew why they were like that. None of them knew what was in the shard. None of them realised it was in control of thousands of lives. None of them knew what they were protecting and it frightened them.

She looked at the sand dunes which seemed to stretch endlessly, glazed by the blazing sun. Then she saw it, a small glint on top of one of the dunes.

Abby squinted at Sydney in suspicion and followed her gaze. She saw the glint and yelled. But it was too late.
